FAQs

Why do I need this?

The original compressors are inefficient, expensive, and very hard to find a reliable new or rebuilt unit these days. Sanden compressors and replicas of them are reliable, efficient, and easy to find.

What compressors can I use?

Any Sanden or Sanden replica that has mounting ears and a double V groove pulley. 508 (5 piston) and 709 (7 piston) style both work equally well. There's practically no difference, but the 7 piston may use less horsepower. The 125mm pulley works best, but other sizes can work too.

What belt do I need?

There are a lot of different sized pulleys on the compressors and on the engines. You'll have to find the optimal belt size for yours. I recommend measuring to get close, and buying 3 or 4 of the closest sizes to test fit. You want the shortest belt that is possible to install. Once it stretches later from use, you need to have some adjustment left to tighten it up.

What else do I have to do?

To install the new compressor, not much. Just customize the existing hoses to the right length and with the proper ends to fit. Most hydraulic shops can make A/C hoses for you.
However, the rest of the system probably needs expert attention. If you don't have experience with A/C repairs, I recommend hiring a shop to do the work. You have to remove any old refrigerant safely and lawfully. You have to make sure your system has no leaks, which means all new O-rings, and leak testing. And if you're converting an R-12 system to R-134a, you probably need a new parallel flow condenser to get the performance you desire.
